Types of Matrices and Basic Concepts
- A matrix is a rectangular arrangement of mn numbers in m rows and n columns
- Order of matrix is denoted as m × n (read as m by n)
- Elements are denoted as aij where i = row number, j = column number
Matrix Operations - Addition, Subtraction, and Scalar Multiplication
- Matrix addition/subtraction requires same dimensions
- Add/subtract corresponding elements: (A ± B)ij = aij ± bij
- Scalar multiplication: multiply each element by the scalar
Matrix Multiplication
- Matrices A(m×n) and B(p×q) can be multiplied only if n = p
- Result AB has order m×q
- Element (AB)ij = Σ(aik × bkj) for k=1 to n
Transpose and Special Matrices
- Transpose AT is obtained by interchanging rows and columns
- If A is m×n, then AT is n×m
- Properties: (AT)T = A, (A+B)T = AT + BT, (AB)T = BTAT
