Motion and Its Description
- Motion is a relative concept - an object may be at rest relative to one observer but in motion relative to another
- Motion depends on the frame of reference chosen for observation
- Examples: A person sitting in a moving bus is at rest relative to other passengers but in motion relative to trees outside
Distance and Displacement
- Distance is a scalar quantity (has magnitude only)
- Displacement is a vector quantity (has both magnitude and direction)
- Distance can never be negative, but displacement can be negative
Speed and Velocity
- Speed is a scalar quantity, velocity is a vector quantity
- Both have the same units: m/s in SI system, cm/s in CGS system
- Speed is always positive, velocity can be positive or negative
Acceleration
- Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
- It is a vector quantity with SI unit m/s²
- Positive acceleration: velocity increases with time
