Key Topics to Revise

1

Motion and Its Description

  • Motion is a relative concept - an object may be at rest relative to one observer but in motion relative to another
  • Motion depends on the frame of reference chosen for observation
  • Examples: A person sitting in a moving bus is at rest relative to other passengers but in motion relative to trees outside
2

Distance and Displacement

  • Distance is a scalar quantity (has magnitude only)
  • Displacement is a vector quantity (has both magnitude and direction)
  • Distance can never be negative, but displacement can be negative
3

Speed and Velocity

  • Speed is a scalar quantity, velocity is a vector quantity
  • Both have the same units: m/s in SI system, cm/s in CGS system
  • Speed is always positive, velocity can be positive or negative
4

Acceleration

  • Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
  • It is a vector quantity with SI unit m/s²
  • Positive acceleration: velocity increases with time
