Motion and Its Description

  • Motion is a relative concept - an object may be at rest relative to one observer but in motion relative to another
  • Motion depends on the frame of reference chosen for observation
  • Examples: A person sitting in a moving bus is at rest relative to other passengers but in motion relative to trees outside

Distance and Displacement

  • Distance is a scalar quantity (has magnitude only)
  • Displacement is a vector quantity (has both magnitude and direction)
