Key Topics to Revise

1

7.1 Describing Motion

  • Motion is the change in position of an object with respect to time and a reference point
  • A reference point (origin) is essential to describe the position of any object
  • Objects can appear to be in motion for one observer and at rest for another (relative motion)
2

7.1.2 Uniform and Non-uniform Motion

  • Uniform Motion: Object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time
  • Non-uniform Motion: Object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time
  • Time intervals considered should be small for accurate description
3

7.2 Measuring Rate of Motion - Speed

  • Speed measures how fast an object moves - distance covered per unit time
  • SI unit of speed is m/s or ms⁻¹, other units include cm/s and km/h
  • Speed is always positive and is a scalar quantity
4

7.2.1 Speed with Direction - Velocity

  • Velocity is speed in a definite direction - vector quantity
  • Velocity can change by changing speed, direction, or both
  • Average velocity = (Initial velocity + Final velocity) ÷ 2 (for uniform acceleration)
