Frequently Asked Questions

How does JoSAA college allocation work?

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts counselling for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks. You fill choices (college + branch combinations) and seats are allocated based on your rank, category, and preference order across multiple rounds.

For top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) CSE branch, you typically need a JEE Main rank under 5,000 (General). For mid-tier NITs, a rank of 10,000-20,000 can get CSE. For newer NITs, ranks up to 30,000-40,000 may work. Home state quota provides additional advantage.

NITs reserve 50% seats for home state candidates and 50% for other state candidates. Home state cutoffs are usually higher (easier to get in) than other state cutoffs. This means your effective rank requirement can be 1.5-2x more lenient if you belong to the NIT's home state.

Yes, with a rank of 50,000 in General category, you can get admission in newer NITs (like NIT Agartala, NIT Srinagar, NIT Puducherry) in branches like Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering. SC/ST/OBC candidates have better options at this rank.
