Frequently Asked Questions

How is JEE Main rank calculated from percentile?

JEE Main rank is calculated using the formula: Rank = ((100 - Percentile) / 100) × Total Candidates. For example, if your percentile is 98 and total candidates are 12,50,000, your rank = ((100 - 98) / 100) × 12,50,000 = 25,000. NTA normalises scores across sessions before calculating percentile.

At 95 percentile in JEE Main 2026, you can expect a rank between 50,000 and 62,500 approximately (assuming 12.5 lakh total candidates). This rank range is typically sufficient for admission to NITs in home state quota for many branches.

No. JEE Main percentile is NOT the same as percentage. Percentile indicates the percentage of candidates you scored better than. A percentile of 95 means you scored better than 95% of all candidates. Percentage is simply (marks obtained / total marks) × 100.

Approximately 12-13 lakh (1.2-1.3 million) unique candidates appear for JEE Main each year. In 2025, about 12.5 lakh candidates appeared. This number is used to calculate ranks from percentile scores.

For NIT admission through JoSAA counselling, you generally need: 97+ percentile for top NITs (CSE/ECE), 90-95 percentile for mid-tier NITs, and 80-90 percentile for other NITs in home state quota. Category candidates may get admission at lower percentiles.

Your All India Rank (AIR) is the same regardless of category. However, during JoSAA counselling, seats are allocated based on category-wise cutoffs. SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates may get admission at NITs/IITs at lower ranks compared to General category.
