7.1 Describing Motion
- Motion is the change in position of an object with respect to time and a reference point
- A reference point (origin) is essential to describe the position of any object
- Objects can appear to be in motion for one observer and at rest for another (relative motion)
7.1.2 Uniform and Non-uniform Motion
- Uniform Motion: Object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time
- Non-uniform Motion: Object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time
- Time intervals considered should be small for accurate description
7.2 Measuring Rate of Motion - Speed
- Speed measures how fast an object moves - distance covered per unit time
- SI unit of speed is m/s or ms⁻¹, other units include cm/s and km/h
- Speed is always positive and is a scalar quantity
7.2.1 Speed with Direction - Velocity
- Velocity is speed in a definite direction - vector quantity
- Velocity can change by changing speed, direction, or both
- Average velocity = (Initial velocity + Final velocity) ÷ 2 (for uniform acceleration)
