JEE Main Exam Pattern 2026 — Paper Structure, Marking & Time Strategy

JEE Main 2026 exam pattern — paper structure, question types, marking scheme, time management strategy, and section-wise approach for maximum marks.

JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 has 90 questions (attempt 75) for 300 marks in 3 hours. Each subject: 20 MCQs (compulsory) + 10 numerical (attempt 5). MCQs have −1 negative marking; numerical questions have zero negative marking. Exam is computer-based (CBT).

Paper 1 Structure (B.E./B.Tech)

SubjectSection A (MCQ)Section B (Numerical)Total QuestionsMax Marks
Physics20 (all compulsory)10 (attempt any 5)30100
Chemistry20 (all compulsory)10 (attempt any 5)30100

Marking Scheme

Question TypeCorrectWrongUnattemptedKey Insight
MCQ (Section A)+4−10Attempt only if you can eliminate at least 2 options
Numerical Value (Section B)+400No penalty — always attempt all 5 chosen questions

Critical insight: Numerical value questions have ZERO negative marking. Even a random guess costs nothing. Always attempt all 5 numerical questions you choose — never leave them blank.

Paper 2A & 2B (B.Arch / B.Planning)

PaperSubjectsMarksDuration
Paper 2A (B.Arch)Maths (100) + Aptitude (200) + Drawing (100)4003 hours
Paper 2B (B.Planning)Maths (100) + Aptitude (200) + Planning (100)4003 hours

Paper 2A Drawing section is pen-and-paper (even though rest is CBT). Paper 2B Planning section is MCQ-based.

Time Management Strategy (3 Hours = 180 Minutes)

PhaseTimeWhat to Do
Phase 1: Chemistry45–50 minFastest to finish. Inorganic (10 min) → Physical (20 min) → Organic (15–20 min). Target: 80+ marks.
Phase 2: Maths or Physics55–60 minYour second-strongest subject. Do easy questions first, mark hard ones for later.
Phase 3: Remaining Subject55–60 minWeakest subject last — you have secured marks already.
Phase 4: Review15 minCheck marked-for-review questions. Fill remaining numerical answers. Verify answer bubbles.

Per-Question Time Budget

Question TypeIdeal TimeMax Time
Chemistry MCQ (easy/medium)1–2 min2.5 min
Physics MCQ2–3 min4 min
Maths MCQ2–3 min4 min
Numerical (any subject)3–4 min5 min

Rule: If a question takes more than 4 minutes, mark it for review and move on. Come back during Phase 4.

CBT Interface — What to Expect

  • Question palette: All 90 questions visible on the right panel with colour codes — green (answered), red (not answered), purple (marked for review), grey (not visited).
  • Navigation: Click any question number to jump directly. No need to go in order.
  • Mark for Review: Use this for questions you want to revisit. They appear purple in the palette.
  • Subject switching: Tabs at the top — Physics, Chemistry, Maths. Switch freely anytime.
  • Timer: Countdown timer visible at top. Shows total remaining time.
  • Virtual calculator: Available on screen. Practise using it — it is slower than a physical calculator.
  • Rough sheet: Physical rough sheets provided. Write your roll number on them. Return ALL sheets.

Attempt Strategy by Difficulty

RoundWhat to DoTime
Round 1 (Easy)Go through ALL questions. Answer easy ones instantly. Mark medium/hard for review.60–70 min
Round 2 (Medium)Attempt marked questions that you can solve with some thought.60–70 min
Round 3 (Hard/Review)Try remaining hard questions. Make educated guesses on MCQs (if you can eliminate 2 options). Fill all numerical answers.30–40 min

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Spending too long on one question. 5+ minutes on one question = 1–2 easier questions missed elsewhere.
  2. Not reading the question carefully. JEE Main has tricky wording. Read twice before solving.
  3. Calculation errors. Use rough sheets. Write each step. Double-check numerical answers.
  4. Leaving numerical questions blank. Zero negative marking — always fill something.
  5. Panic if first subject goes badly. Each subject is independent. A bad Chemistry section does not affect your Maths score. Reset mentally between subjects.
  6. Not using the "Mark for Review" feature. This is your best tool. Use it liberally.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are there in JEE Main 2026?

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) has 90 questions total — 30 per subject (Physics, Chemistry, Maths). Each subject has Section A (20 MCQs, all compulsory) + Section B (10 numerical value questions, attempt any 5). You attempt 75 out of 90 questions. Total marks: 300.

Yes, but only for MCQs. MCQ (Section A): +4 correct, −1 wrong, 0 unattempted. Numerical Value (Section B): +4 correct, 0 wrong, 0 unattempted. There is NO negative marking for numerical value questions — so always attempt all 5 chosen numerical questions even if unsure.

3 hours (180 minutes) for Paper 1. PwD candidates get 4 hours (240 minutes). The exam is conducted in two shifts: Morning (9:00 AM–12:00 PM) and Afternoon (3:00 PM–6:00 PM). You can switch between subjects during the exam — there is no fixed order.

JEE Main is Computer Based Test (CBT) — conducted online at designated exam centres. You sit at a computer and click on answer options. Rough sheets are provided at the centre for calculations. You cannot bring your own calculator, phone, or any electronic device.

Yes. NTA conducts JEE Main in 2 sessions: Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April). You can appear in both. Your best NTA percentile from either session is considered as your final score. Appearing in both sessions gives you two chances and NTA takes the better score automatically.

Most toppers recommend: Start with your strongest subject (build confidence and secure marks), then attempt your second-strongest, then the weakest. Common order: Chemistry → Maths → Physics or Chemistry → Physics → Maths. Chemistry is usually fastest to finish (15–20 minutes for Inorganic). Save at least 15 minutes for review.
