NEET Exam Pattern 2026 — Paper Structure, Marking & Strategy
NEET 2026 exam pattern — 200 questions, 720 marks, 3 hours 20 minutes. Complete paper structure, marking scheme, subject-wise question distribution, and time.
NEET 2026 is a pen-and-paper (offline) exam with 200 MCQs for 720 marks in 3 hours 20 minutes. You attempt 180 questions across Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. Marking: +4 correct, −1 wrong. Biology carries 50% of total marks (360/720) — master it thoroughly.
Complete Paper Structure
| Subject | Section A (Compulsory) | Section B (Choose 10) | Total Qs | Attempt | Max Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 35 MCQs | 15 MCQs (attempt 10) | 50 | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | 35 MCQs | 15 MCQs (attempt 10) | 50 | 45 | 180 |
| Botany | 35 MCQs | 15 MCQs (attempt 10) | 50 | 45 | 180 |
| Zoology | 35 MCQs | 15 MCQs (attempt 10) | 50 | 45 | 180 |
| Total | 140 | 60 (attempt 40) | 200 | 180 | 720 |
Marking Scheme
| Action | Marks | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Correct answer | +4 | Accuracy is king — 1 correct = 4 marks gained |
| Wrong answer | −1 | 1 wrong = net loss of 5 marks (4 lost + 1 penalty) |
| Unattempted | 0 | Better to skip than guess randomly |
| Multiple answers marked | −1 | Darken only ONE circle per question on OMR |
When to attempt: Attempt if you can eliminate at least 2 options (50% chance = expected value positive). If completely unsure, skip. For Section B, choose the 10 easiest questions — leave the hardest 5.

Take a NEET Mock — FreeTime Management Strategy (200 minutes)
| Phase | Time | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Biology (Botany + Zoology) | 50–60 min | Start here — fastest to answer, highest marks (360). Target: 300+ marks from Biology. |
| Chemistry | 40–50 min | Inorganic first (memory-based, fast), then Physical (formula-based), then Organic. |
| Physics | 50–60 min | Most calculation-heavy. Do easy conceptual questions first, hard numericals last. |
| Review + OMR Transfer | 20–30 min | Transfer answers to OMR carefully. Double-check bubbling. Review flagged questions. |
OMR Sheet — Critical Tips
NEET is OMR-based (offline). Your answers are marked on a separate OMR sheet that is machine-read. Mistakes on the OMR = lost marks.
- Use only the provided ballpoint pen (blue/black). Pencil marks are not read.
- Darken the circle completely. Partial darkening may not be read by the machine.
- Do NOT use whitener or correction fluid. OMR with whitener = cancelled.
- Transfer answers in batches. Do 1 subject in the question booklet, then transfer to OMR. Do not wait until the end — you may run out of time.
- Match question numbers carefully. The most common OMR error: writing the answer in the wrong question number's row.
- Do NOT fold or crumple the OMR. Damaged OMR = marks may not be read.
NEET vs JEE Main — Pattern Comparison
| Feature | NEET | JEE Main |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Offline (OMR) | Online (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 hrs 20 min | 3 hrs |
| Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology | Physics, Chemistry, Maths |
| Total Questions | 200 (attempt 180) | 90 (attempt 75) |
| Max Marks | 720 | 300 |
| Negative Marking | −1 for all wrong MCQs | −1 for MCQs only (not numerical) |
| Attempts per Year | 1 | 2 (Session 1 + Session 2) |
| Scoring | Raw marks | Percentile |

How many questions are in NEET 2026?
NEET has 200 questions total (50 per subject × 4 subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology). You attempt 180 questions — each subject has Section A (35 compulsory MCQs) + Section B (15 MCQs, attempt any 10). Maximum marks: 720.
Is NEET online or offline?
NEET is conducted OFFLINE (pen and paper mode) using OMR sheets. You mark answers by darkening circles with a ballpoint pen. This is different from JEE Main which is computer-based. Practise filling OMR sheets — incorrect bubbling means lost marks even if you know the answer.
What is the marking scheme in NEET?
+4 for correct answer, −1 for wrong answer, 0 for unattempted. Maximum: 720 (180 × 4). Minimum possible: −180 (if all 180 attempted answers are wrong). Negative marking means you should NOT guess randomly — only attempt if you can eliminate at least 2 options.
How long is the NEET exam?
3 hours 20 minutes (200 minutes). The exam starts at 2:00 PM and ends at 5:20 PM. There is no break. PwD candidates get additional time (4 hours 40 minutes). You must manage all 4 subjects within this single sitting.
In what language can I take NEET?
NEET is offered in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. You select the language during registration. If there is any discrepancy between translations, the English version is considered final.
What is the best order to attempt NEET subjects?
Most toppers recommend: Biology first (Botany + Zoology = 90 questions, 360 marks — this is where you build your score), then Chemistry (easier to score quickly), then Physics last (most time-consuming). Biology should take 50–60 minutes, Chemistry 40–50 minutes, Physics 50–60 minutes. Keep 20 minutes for review and OMR transfer.
