What to Focus On

  • In a right triangle, the hypotenuse is always opposite the 90° angle and is the longest side.
  • The 'opposite' and 'adjacent' sides change depending on which acute angle you are considering.
  • Always identify the reference angle first, then label the sides accordingly.

  • SOH-CAH-TOA: Sin = Opp/Hyp, Cos = Adj/Hyp, Tan = Opp/Adj.
  • The three reciprocal ratios: cosec A = 1/sin A, sec A = 1/cos A, cot A = 1/tan A.
  • The quotient relations: tan A = sin A / cos A and cot A = cos A / sin A.

  • sin 30° = cos 60° = 1/2; sin 60° = cos 30° = √3/2 — these are complementary pairs.
  • sin 45° = cos 45° = 1/√2; tan 45° = 1 — the 45° triangle is isosceles.
  • tan 90° and sec 90° are NOT DEFINED (division by zero since cos 90° = 0).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

sin A means 'sin multiplied by A', so sin 2A = 2 × sin A

cosec A is the same as cos A (or that cosec = cos + something)

The trigonometric ratios depend on the size (length of sides) of the triangle, not just the angle

Memory Tips

Definition of sin, cos, tan using sides of a right triangle

cosec, sec, cot are reciprocals of sin, cos, tan respectively

tan A = sin A / cos A

Values of sin for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°
