Topics in Real Numbers
The Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic
- Every composite number can be expressed as a product of prime numbers in a unique way (except for the order of factors)
- Prime factorization is the process of writing a number as a product of its prime factors
- The uniqueness of prime factorization is what makes this theorem fundamental to number theory
Revisiting Irrational Numbers
- Irrational numbers cannot be expressed in the form p/q where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0
- √2, √3, √5, and in general √p (where p is prime) are all irrational
- Proof by contradiction is the standard method to prove irrationality
Euclid's Division Algorithm
- For any two positive integers a and b, there exist unique integers q and r such that a = bq + r, where 0 ≤ r < b
- This is the mathematical form of the division algorithm we use in arithmetic
- The algorithm is useful for finding HCF of two numbers efficiently
