Electric Charge and Basic Properties
- Electric charge is a fundamental property of matter that causes electromagnetic interactions
- Two types of charges exist: positive (glass rod rubbed with silk) and negative (plastic rod rubbed with fur)
- Like charges repel, unlike charges attract - this is the fundamental law of electrostatic interaction
Coulomb's Law and Force Between Charges
- Coulomb's law gives the electrostatic force between two point charges
- Force is directly proportional to product of charges and inversely proportional to square of distance
- Force acts along the line joining the two charges - repulsive for like charges, attractive for unlike charges
Electric Field and Field Lines
- Electric field is the force experienced by a unit positive test charge at that point
- Electric field exists around charges even without a test charge present
- Field due to positive charge points radially outward, negative charge points radially inward
Electric Dipole
- Electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges separated by small distance
- Dipole moment p⃗ = q × 2a (from negative to positive charge)
- Field of dipole decreases as 1/r³ (faster than single charge field)
