Introduction and Historical Background
- Electricity and magnetism were initially considered separate phenomena
- Oersted, Ampere showed moving charges produce magnetic fields
- Faraday (England) and Henry (USA) discovered electromagnetic induction around 1830
Faraday and Henry's Experiments
- Experiment 1: Moving magnet near coil induces current - deflection only during motion
- Experiment 2: Moving current-carrying coil near another coil induces current
- Experiment 3: Changing current in one coil (using tapping key) induces current in nearby coil
Magnetic Flux
- Magnetic flux is analogous to electric flux
- Depends on magnetic field strength, area, and angle between field and area vector
- For uniform field: ΦB = B·A = BA cos θ
Faraday's Law of Induction
- EMF induced equals negative rate of change of magnetic flux
- For N-turn coil: multiply by number of turns
- Negative sign indicates direction (Lenz's law)
