Electric Current
- Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge through a conductor
- Current flows from positive to negative terminal in external circuit
- Conventional current direction is opposite to electron flow
Electric Current in Conductors
- Free electrons in metals act as charge carriers
- Without electric field: random thermal motion, no net current
- With electric field: electrons drift towards positive terminal
Ohm's Law
- Fundamental law relating voltage, current, and resistance
- V ∝ I or V = IR (for ohmic materials)
- R depends on material and dimensions of conductor
Drift Velocity and Current
- Drift velocity: average velocity of charge carriers under electric field
- Much smaller than thermal velocity of electrons
- Current density J = nqvd
