Key Topics to Revise
1
13.2 Conditional Probability
- Conditional probability measures the likelihood of an event occurring given that another event has already occurred
- Formula: P(A|B) = P(A∩B)/P(B), where P(B) ≠ 0
- Range: 0 ≤ P(A|B) ≤ 1 for all events A and B
2
13.3 Multiplication Theorem
- Used to find probability of intersection of two or more events
- For two events: P(A∩B) = P(A) × P(B|A) = P(B) × P(A|B)
- For three events: P(A∩B∩C) = P(A) × P(B|A) × P(C|A∩B)
3
13.4 Independent Events
- Two events are independent if occurrence of one doesn't affect the probability of the other
- For independent events: P(A|B) = P(A) and P(B|A) = P(B)
- Independence condition: P(A∩B) = P(A) × P(B)
4
13.5 Bayes' Theorem and Total Probability
- Partition of sample space: events that are mutually exclusive, exhaustive, and have non-zero probabilities
- Total Probability Theorem: P(A) = Σ P(Eᵢ) × P(A|Eᵢ) for partition {E₁, E₂, ..., Eₙ}
- Bayes' Theorem: P(Eᵢ|A) = [P(Eᵢ) × P(A|Eᵢ)] / [Σ P(Eⱼ) × P(A|Eⱼ)]
