What to Focus On
- Subjects and verbs must agree in number (singular with singular, plural with plural)
- Words between subject and verb do not affect agreement
- Prepositional phrases between subject and verb are ignored
- Different subjects in same sentence need separate auxiliaries when numbers differ
- Past tense in main clause should be followed by past tense in subordinate clause
- Universal truths can use present tense even after past tense main clause
- Use 'some' in affirmative sentences, 'any' in negative/interrogative sentences
- For two items, use comparative (better); for more than two, use superlative (best)
- When comparing two qualities of same person/thing, use 'more' not '-er'
Common Mistakes to Avoid
When two subjects are joined by 'and', the verb is always plural
In either/or and neither/nor constructions, the verb always agrees with the first subject
Indefinite pronouns like 'everyone', 'somebody', 'anybody' can take plural pronouns for reference
