  • Based on Pythagorean theorem

  • Internal division: coordinates = (mx₂ + nx₁)/(m + n), (my₂ + ny₁)/(m + n)
  • External division: coordinates = (mx₂ - nx₁)/(m - n), (my₂ - ny₁)/(m - n)
  • Midpoint formula when m = n = 1: ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The distance formula gives the same result regardless of which point is taken as (x₁, y₁) and which as (x₂, y₂)

In the section formula, the ratio m:n means the point divides the line segment into exactly m and n equal parts

The midpoint formula is just a special case that can be derived by setting m = n = 1 in the section formula
