  • Bond angle C-N-H is approximately 108° due to lone pair repulsion

  • IUPAC system: alkane + amine (methanamine, ethanamine)
  • Identical groups use prefixes di- or tri- (dimethylamine, triethylamine)

  • Nitro compound reduction: R-NO₂ → R-NH₂ (using H₂/catalyst or metal/acid)
  • Hoffmann ammonolysis: R-X + NH₃ → mixture of 1°, 2°, 3° amines
  • Nitrile reduction: R-CN → R-CH₂NH₂ (ascent of amine series)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Tertiary amines are always more basic than primary and secondary amines because they have more alkyl groups donating electrons

Aniline is more basic than aliphatic amines because it has a benzene ring that can donate electrons

All three types of amines (1°, 2°, 3°) can be easily distinguished by Hinsberg's test because they all react with benzenesulfonyl chloride
