Topics in Ionic Equilibrium
1
Strong and Weak Electrolytes
- Strong electrolytes dissociate almost completely (α ≈ 1) in aqueous solution (e.g., HCl, NaOH, NaCl)
- Weak electrolytes dissociate partially (α << 1) in aqueous solution (e.g., CH₃COOH, NH₄OH)
- Degree of dissociation (α) = Number of molecules dissociated / Total number of molecules
2
Ostwald's Dilution Law
- Applies only to weak electrolytes, relates degree of dissociation to concentration
- For weak electrolyte AB ⇌ A⁺ + B⁻: K = Cα²/(1-α)
- For very weak electrolytes (α << 1): K = Cα² or α = √(K/C)
3
Acid-Base Concepts
- Arrhenius concept: Acids give H⁺ ions, bases give OH⁻ ions (limited to aqueous solutions)
- Brønsted-Lowry concept: Acids are proton donors, bases are proton acceptors
- Lewis concept: Acids are electron pair acceptors, bases are electron pair donors
4
pH and pOH Scale
- pH = -log[H⁺], pOH = -log[OH⁻]
- At 25°C: pH + pOH = 14 (pKw = 14)
- Neutral solution: pH = pOH = 7 (at 25°C)
