Topics in Semiconductors
Energy Bands in Solids
- Materials are classified as conductors, semiconductors, or insulators based on electrical conductivity
- Energy bands form when atoms come close together, creating allowed and forbidden energy regions
- Band gap (Eg) is the energy difference between valence and conduction bands
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Semiconductors
- Intrinsic semiconductors: Pure semiconductors with equal number of holes and electrons (nh = ne)
- Extrinsic semiconductors: Doped with impurities to increase conductivity
- p-type: Doped with trivalent impurities (B, Al, Ga, In) - holes are majority carriers
p-n Junction Diode
- p-n junction forms when p-type and n-type materials are joined
- Depletion region forms at junction due to diffusion of charge carriers
- Potential barrier (VB) prevents further diffusion in equilibrium
Junction Diode as Rectifier
- Rectifier converts AC to DC by allowing current in one direction only
- Half-wave rectifier uses single diode, conducts only during positive half-cycles
- Full-wave rectifier uses four diodes in bridge configuration
