Key Topics to Revise
Reflection of Light by Spherical Mirrors
- Light follows two fundamental laws of reflection: angle of incidence equals angle of reflection, and incident ray, reflected ray, and normal lie in same plane
- Spherical mirrors are parts of hollow spheres - concave (converging) and convex (diverging)
- For spherical mirrors, focal length f = R/2, where R is radius of curvature
Refraction of Light
- Refraction occurs when light passes from one medium to another due to change in speed
- Snell's law: μ₁sin i = μ₂sin r, where μ is refractive index
- Refractive index μ = c/v = speed of light in vacuum/speed in medium
Refraction at Spherical Surfaces and Thin Lenses
- Refraction at spherical surface: μ₂/v - μ₁/u = (μ₂-μ₁)/R
- Lens maker's formula: 1/f = (μ-1)(1/R₁ - 1/R₂)
- Thin lens formula: 1/v - 1/u = 1/f (similar to mirror formula but different sign)
Refraction Through Prism
- Prism: triangular piece of transparent material with refracting angle A
- Deviation δ = i + e - A, where i=incident angle, e=emergent angle
- At minimum deviation: i = e, and ray inside prism parallel to base
