Crystal Structure and Solids
- Crystalline solids have definite geometrical form with ordered arrangement of atoms in 3D space
- Amorphous solids lack definite external form and have only short-range order

Energy Bands in Solids
- Energy levels of isolated atoms spread into energy bands when atoms form solids
- Valence band contains valence electrons and is completely filled at 0K
- Conduction band is higher energy band where electrons can move freely
Semiconductors and Doping
- Intrinsic semiconductors are pure with equal electron and hole concentrations
- Extrinsic semiconductors are doped with impurities to modify electrical properties

- Depletion region forms at junction due to diffusion of charge carriers
- Potential barrier prevents further diffusion: 0.3V for Ge, 0.7V for Si
