What to Focus On
- Eight parts of speech form the foundation of English grammar
- Each part has a specific function in sentence construction
- Proper identification improves writing and speaking accuracy
- Nouns can function as subjects, objects, or complements
- Proper nouns are always capitalized
- Countable nouns have plural forms, non-countable don't
- Pronouns must agree with antecedents in number and gender
- Personal pronouns have different forms for subject and object positions
- Avoid ambiguous pronoun references
Common Mistakes to Avoid
When two singular subjects are joined by 'or' or 'nor', the verb should be plural because there are two subjects mentioned
Collective nouns like 'team', 'family', 'jury' are always singular and always take singular verbs
Use 'an' before any word starting with a vowel letter (a, e, i, o, u)
