What to Focus On
- Logarithm is the inverse of exponentiation: a^x = m ⟺ x = log_a(m)
- Base 'a' must be positive and not equal to 1
- The number 'm' must be positive
- log_a(1) = 0 for all valid bases a
- log_a(a) = 1 for all valid bases a
- These properties are universal and apply to all logarithmic systems
- Product Rule: log_a(mn) = log_a(m) + log_a(n)
- Quotient Rule: log_a(m/n) = log_a(m) - log_a(n)
- Power Rule: log_a(m^n) = n × log_a(m)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
log(a + b) = log a + log b
log(-x) is always undefined
log_a(b^n) = n × log_a(b) only when n is a positive integer
