Physics — Syllabus & Topics

Topics covered in Physics for XAT General Knowledge.

Topics in Physics

1

Units, Measurements and Motion

  • SI system has 7 fundamental units: metre (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (current), kelvin (temperature), candela (luminous intensity), mole (amount of substance)
  • Scalar quantities have magnitude only (speed, mass, energy); Vector quantities have magnitude and direction (velocity, force, acceleration)
  • Distance is total path covered; Displacement is shortest distance in specific direction
2

Work, Energy and Power

  • Work = Force × Displacement × cos(θ) where θ is angle between force and displacement
  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another
  • Kinetic Energy = ½mv², Potential Energy = mgh in gravitational field
3

Gravitation and Satellite Motion

  • Universal gravitation: F = Gm₁m₂/r² where G = 6.67×10⁻¹¹ Nm²/kg²
  • Acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 m/s² varies with altitude, depth, and latitude
  • Orbital velocity of satellite = √(gR) = 7.9 km/s near Earth's surface
4

Pressure, Fluids and Heat

  • Pressure = Force/Area; Atmospheric pressure = 1.01×10⁵ Pa = 760 mmHg
  • Pascal's principle: Pressure applied to enclosed fluid transmits undiminished
  • Archimedes' principle: Buoyant force equals weight of displaced fluid
