Core Concepts and Definitions

Mechanical Advantage, Velocity Ratio, and Efficiency

M.A. = Load (L) / Effort (E)

V.R. = d_E / d_L = Velocity of Effort / Velocity of Load

η = W_output / W_input = (L × d_L) / (E × d_E)

η = M.A. / V.R.

M.A. = η × V.R.

Levers

L × Load arm (BF) = E × Effort arm (AF)

M.A. = Effort arm / Load arm = AF / BF

V.R. = Effort arm / Load arm (for ideal lever)

Pulleys

Single Fixed Pulley: M.A. = V.R. = 1

Single Movable Pulley: M.A. (ideal) = 2, V.R. = 2

Combination of Pulleys (n movable pulleys): M.A. = 2^n, V.R. = 2^n

Block and Tackle (n total pulleys): M.A. (ideal) = n, V.R. = n

Block and Tackle with weight W of lower block: M.A. = n − (W/E)
