Key Topics to Revise
Introduction to Machines
- A machine is a device that helps overcome a large load by applying a small effort at a convenient point
- Machines can work as force multipliers (M.A. > 1) or speed multipliers (M.A. < 1)
- Simple machines: Can be handled manually (lever, pulley, inclined plane, screw, wedge)
Levers
- A lever is a rigid bar that rotates about a fixed point called fulcrum
- Works on the principle of moments: Clockwise moment = Anticlockwise moment
- Three types: Class I (fulcrum between effort and load), Class II (load between fulcrum and effort), Class III (effort between fulcrum and load)
Pulleys
- A pulley is a wheel with a grooved rim around which a rope passes
- Single fixed pulley: M.A. = V.R. = 1, changes direction of effort
- Single movable pulley: M.A. = V.R. = 2 (ideal), works as force multiplier
