Light – Reflection and Refraction
Karnataka Board · Class 10 · Science
Quick revision notes for Light – Reflection and Refraction — Karnataka Board Class 10 Science. Key concepts, formulas, and definitions for last-minute revision.
Key Topics to Revise
Nature and Behavior of Light
- Light travels in straight lines in a homogeneous medium - this is called rectilinear propagation
- Light rays cast sharp shadows when blocked by opaque objects, proving straight-line motion
- Light can be reflected, refracted, absorbed, or transmitted depending on the material it encounters
Reflection of Light
- Reflection occurs when light bounces off a surface without entering the material
- Angle of incidence always equals angle of reflection for all surfaces
- Incident ray, reflected ray, and normal all lie in the same plane
Spherical Mirrors - Concave Mirrors
- Concave mirrors have reflecting surface curved inwards (like inside of a spoon)
- They converge parallel light rays to a point called principal focus
- Centre of curvature (C) lies in front of the mirror
Spherical Mirrors - Convex Mirrors
- Convex mirrors have reflecting surface curved outwards (like outside of a spoon)
- They diverge parallel light rays - rays appear to come from principal focus
- Centre of curvature (C) lies behind the mirror
