Key Topics to Revise

1

Nature and Behavior of Light

  • Light travels in straight lines in a homogeneous medium - this is called rectilinear propagation
  • Light rays cast sharp shadows when blocked by opaque objects, proving straight-line motion
  • Light can be reflected, refracted, absorbed, or transmitted depending on the material it encounters
2

Reflection of Light

  • Reflection occurs when light bounces off a surface without entering the material
  • Angle of incidence always equals angle of reflection for all surfaces
  • Incident ray, reflected ray, and normal all lie in the same plane
3

Spherical Mirrors - Concave Mirrors

  • Concave mirrors have reflecting surface curved inwards (like inside of a spoon)
  • They converge parallel light rays to a point called principal focus
  • Centre of curvature (C) lies in front of the mirror
4

Spherical Mirrors - Convex Mirrors

  • Convex mirrors have reflecting surface curved outwards (like outside of a spoon)
  • They diverge parallel light rays - rays appear to come from principal focus
  • Centre of curvature (C) lies behind the mirror
