1

Introduction to Tissues

  • A tissue is a group of cells similar in structure and/or work together to achieve a particular function
  • Unicellular organisms like Amoeba perform all functions with a single cell
  • Multicellular organisms show division of labour - different cells perform different functions
2

Differences Between Plant and Animal Tissues

  • Plants are stationary, animals are mobile - affects tissue structure
  • Plants need more supportive tissue (often dead cells) to stay upright
  • Animals need more living tissues as they consume more energy
3

Plant Tissues - Meristematic Tissue

  • Growth occurs only in specific regions containing meristematic tissue
  • Three types based on location: Apical, Lateral, Intercalary
  • Apical meristem: at growing tips of stems and roots - increases length
4

Plant Tissues - Simple Permanent Tissue

  • Formed when meristematic cells differentiate and lose ability to divide
  • Parenchyma: most common, thin-walled living cells, stores food, large intercellular spaces
  • Chlorenchyma: parenchyma with chlorophyll for photosynthesis
