Quick revision notes for Basic Concepts in Geometry — Maharashtra Board Class 9 Mathematics. Key concepts, formulas, and definitions for last-minute revision.
Key Topics to Revise
Basic Geometric Elements (Point, Line, and Plane)
- Point, line, and plane are undefined basic concepts in geometry - they cannot be defined using simpler terms
- A point represents a location and has no dimension (length, width, or height)
- A line is a straight path that extends infinitely in both directions and has only one dimension (length)
Coordinates and Distance
- On a number line, each point corresponds to exactly one real number called its coordinate
- The coordinate tells us the position of the point on the number line
- Distance between two points is always positive (non-negative)
Betweenness
- Betweenness applies only to collinear points (points on the same line)
- For three collinear points P, Q, R: if d(P,Q) + d(Q,R) = d(P,R), then Q is between P and R
- Betweenness is written as P-Q-R when Q is between P and R
Segments, Rays, and Lines
- A line segment consists of two endpoints and all points between them
- A ray has a starting point and extends infinitely in one direction
- A line extends infinitely in both directions
