  • The X-axis is a horizontal number line with positive numbers to the right of origin and negative numbers to the left
  • The Y-axis is a vertical number line with positive numbers above the origin and negative numbers below

Coordinates of Points

  • Every point has a unique ordered pair of coordinates (x,y)
  • x-coordinate (abscissa) is the perpendicular distance from Y-axis
  • y-coordinate (ordinate) is the perpendicular distance from X-axis

  • To plot a point (a,b): move 'a' units along X-axis, then 'b' units parallel to Y-axis
