  • The x-coordinate (abscissa) measures horizontal distance from the y-axis.
  • The y-coordinate (ordinate) measures vertical distance from the x-axis.
  • Points on the x-axis: (x, 0); Points on the y-axis: (0, y).

  • Distance Formula: PQ = √[(x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²]
  • The formula is derived using the Pythagoras Theorem on a constructed right triangle.
  • Distance from origin: OP = √(x² + y²)

  • Section Formula: P = [(m₁x₂ + m₂x₁)/(m₁+m₂), (m₁y₂ + m₂y₁)/(m₁+m₂)]
  • The formula gives the coordinates of a point dividing a segment INTERNALLY in ratio m₁ : m₂.
  • AP : PB = m₁ : m₂ — P lies between A and B.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The Distance Formula only works when both points are in the first quadrant (i.e., both x and y coordinates are positive).

In the Section Formula, the ratio m₁:m₂ corresponds to the point's distance from the SECOND point (not the first), so m₁ is associated with x₂ and m₂ is associated with x₁.

The midpoint formula is a separate, unrelated formula that must be memorised independently from the Section Formula.
