Key Topics to Revise
Fundamental Concepts and Statement Recognition
- A statement is a sentence that is either true or false, but not both
- Mathematical statements involving natural numbers are denoted as p(n)
- p(1), p(k), and p(k+1) represent specific instances of the general statement p(n)
The Principle of Mathematical Induction
- Two conditions must be satisfied: Base case p(1) is true, and Inductive step p(k) → p(k+1)
- The inductive step assumes p(k) is true and proves p(k+1) is true
- We don't need to prove p(k) is actually true - only that IF it's true, THEN p(k+1) is true
Proving Summation Formulas
- Most common type of induction problem in exams
- Always substitute the inductive hypothesis into LHS of p(k+1)
- Factorize and simplify to match the RHS pattern
Proving Inequalities
- Base case verification is crucial - check the inequality holds for n=1 or given starting value
- In inductive step, use the inductive hypothesis as a starting inequality
- Apply valid inequality operations (adding positive terms, multiplying by positive numbers)
