Revision Notes — Chemistry

Key concepts, formulas, and definitions from Chemistry for XAT General Knowledge preparation.

Key Topics to Revise

1

Matter and Its States

  • Matter exists in three primary states: solid (definite shape and volume), liquid (definite volume, no definite shape), and gas (no definite shape or volume)
  • Pure substances are classified as elements (simplest form, cannot be broken down) and compounds (two or more elements in fixed proportion)
  • Mixtures can be homogeneous (uniform composition throughout) or heterogeneous (non-uniform composition with visible boundaries)
2

Atomic Structure and Periodic Properties

  • Atomic number (Z) = number of protons = number of electrons in neutral atom
  • Mass number (A) = number of protons + number of neutrons
  • Isotopes have same atomic number but different mass numbers
3

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

  • Ionic bonds form through complete electron transfer; covalent bonds through electron sharing
  • Ionic compounds have high melting points, conduct electricity in molten state, soluble in polar solvents
  • Covalent compounds have lower melting points, generally poor electrical conductors, soluble in non-polar solvents
4

Acids, Bases, and Salts

  • Acids taste sour, turn blue litmus red, release H⁺ ions in solution
  • Bases taste bitter, turn red litmus blue, release OH⁻ ions in solution
  • pH scale ranges from 0-14; pH < 7 (acidic), pH = 7 (neutral), pH > 7 (basic)
