What to Focus On
- Matter occupies space, has mass, and exists in three states: solid, liquid, gas
- Pure substances include elements (metals, non-metals, metalloids) and compounds
- Mixtures can be homogeneous (uniform composition) or heterogeneous (non-uniform)
- Atomic number (Z) = number of protons = number of electrons in neutral atoms
- Mass number (A) = protons + neutrons
- Isotopes: same Z, different A (e.g., Carbon-12, Carbon-13, Carbon-14)
- Ionic bonds form between metals and non-metals through electron transfer
- Covalent bonds involve electron sharing; can be polar or non-polar
- Hydrogen bonding affects boiling points, solubility, and biological processes
Common Mistakes to Avoid
