What to Focus On
- Regression was introduced by Sir Francis Galton during his study of human inheritance (heights of father-son pairs).
- Regression gives the functional (mathematical) relationship between two correlated variables.
- Independent variable (X) is the causal variable; Dependent variable (Y) is the effect variable.
- Linear Regression Model: Y = α + βX + ε
- α = intercept (value of Y when X = 0), β = regression coefficient (slope), ε = error/disturbance
- Estimated regression equation: Ŷ = a + bX
- Method of Least Squares minimizes the sum of squares of errors: Σ(Y − Ŷ)² is minimum.
- Normal Equations: ΣY = na + bΣX and ΣXY = aΣX + bΣX²
- Regression Coefficient: b = [nΣXY − ΣX·ΣY] / [nΣX² − (ΣX)²]
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The regression line of Y on X and the regression line of X on Y are the same line.
The regression coefficient b is the same as the correlation coefficient r — both measure the relationship between X and Y.
If the correlation coefficient is high (close to 1), the regression estimates are always accurate and reliable.
Memory Tips
Definition of Regression — returning to the mean
Independent Variable (X) vs Dependent Variable (Y)
Linear Regression Model: Y = α + βX + ε
