What to Focus On
- Time (t) is ALWAYS the independent variable in a time series.
- Observations must be arranged in chronological order.
- The unit of time depends on the variable: years for population/GDP, months for temperature/sales, hours for bacterial growth.
- The four components are: Trend (T), Seasonal (S), Cyclical (C), Random (R).
- Additive Model: y = T + S + C + R.
- Trend is the ONLY long-term component; S, C, R are short-term.
- Graphical method is the SIMPLEST method — purely visual, no formulas needed.
- The smooth curve is drawn through the MIDDLE of points by personal judgment.
- Approximately EQUAL numbers of points should lie above and below the trend curve.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
In the Method of Least Squares, the normal equations can be used directly with the actual year values (e.g., 2018, 2019, 2020) without any transformation.
Moving averages can always be placed directly against the middle observation, regardless of whether the period is odd or even.
Trend is only about increase — if a time series shows a decrease over time, it does not have a trend.
Memory Tips
Definition of Time Series — data arranged in chronological order
Four components of Time Series: Trend, Seasonal, Cyclical, Random
Trend — long-term, slow, continuous increase or decrease
Seasonal Component — regular fluctuations within a year due to natural or man-made factors
