What to Focus On

  • There are exactly five categories: Definitely True (a), Probably True (b), Data Inadequate (c), Probably False (d), Definitely False (e).
  • Definitely True requires no assumptions beyond what the passage explicitly states.
  • Probably True requires a small, reasonable assumption supported by the passage's direction.

  • Always read the passage before reading the inferences to avoid anchoring bias.
  • Check for direct support (→ DT) or direct contradiction (→ DF) first to eliminate extreme categories quickly.
  • New entities or comparisons not in the passage almost always signal Data Inadequate.

  • Synonymous restatements of the passage are Definitely True.
  • One reasonable causal step beyond the passage is Probably True.
  • Any entity absent from the passage makes Data Inadequate the likely answer.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

If a fact is logically consistent with the passage, it is 'definitely true'.

If the passage does not explicitly mention something, the inference is automatically 'data inadequate' (option c).

'Probably false' (d) and 'definitely false' (e) are essentially the same — just pick whichever feels more negative.
