How to Study Series

A structured approach to studying Series for BITSAT Logical Reasoning.

Study Plan for Series

1

Day 1–2: Learn the Theory

Study the chapter thoroughly. Note down definitions, formulas, and key concepts.

2

Day 3: Practice Problems

Solve practice questions and previous year BITSAT problems. Focus on MCQs and numerical problems.

3

Day 4: Revise & Test

Revise key formulas and concepts without looking at notes. Take a practice quiz to test your understanding.

What to Focus On

  • Six major types: Number, Alphabet, Alpha-Numeric, Mixed, Letter, Correspondence.
  • Type identification is the first and most time-saving step in BITSAT conditions.
  • Letter positions: A=1, B=2, C=3, …, Z=26. Reverse positions: A=26, Z=1 are also used.

  • Always compute first-order differences first — the most common pattern in BITSAT.
  • If first differences are non-constant but regular, compute second-order differences.
  • Ratio check (GP) when terms grow very rapidly.

  • Assign positions A=1 through Z=26 immediately for any alphabet series.
  • Check positional differences for constant step, increasing step, or decreasing step.
  • For group series, analyse first-letters and last-letters independently.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Every number series must follow a single, uniform arithmetic or geometric rule throughout.

In a 'find the wrong term' question, the term that looks most unusual numerically is the wrong one.

Alphabet series questions only involve moving forward (A→B→C) in the alphabet — reverse movement is rare or a trick.
