Revision Notes — Experiments

Key concepts, formulas, and definitions from Experiments for JEE Advanced Physics preparation.

Key Topics to Revise

1

3.1 Vernier Callipers

  • Vernier callipers measure lengths with precision up to 0.01 cm (0.1 mm)
  • Consists of main scale, vernier scale, and measuring jaws for external, internal, and depth measurements
  • Principle: n VSD = (n-1) MSD where n divisions of vernier scale coincide with (n-1) main scale divisions
2

3.2 Screw Gauge (Micrometer Screw)

  • Screw gauge measures very small lengths with precision up to 0.001 cm (0.01 mm)
  • Based on micrometer screw principle: linear motion proportional to rotational motion
  • Consists of U-shaped frame, fixed stud, movable screw, linear scale (pitch scale), and circular scale
3

3.3 Determination of 'g' using Simple Pendulum

  • Simple pendulum: small bob suspended by inextensible thread, oscillating under gravity
  • Time period independent of mass and amplitude (for small oscillations < 15°)
  • Equivalent length L = l + r, where l is string length and r is radius of bob
4

3.4 Young's Modulus by Searle's Method

  • Measures Young's modulus of elasticity for wire materials
  • Uses two identical wires: one experimental (B) and one reference (A)
  • Reference wire carries constant load to remain taut
