- Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs
- They provide additional information about how, when, where, how much, or how often something happens
- Example: 'I rarely visit the park' - 'rarely' modifies the verb 'visit'
Types of Adverbs
- Adverbs of manner: answer 'How?' - easily, carefully, well
- Adverbs of place: answer 'Where?' - here, there, out, everywhere
- Adverbs of time: answer 'When?' - soon, yesterday, now, tomorrow
Position Rules for Different Adverb Types
- Adverbs of manner, time, and place: Usually placed after intransitive verbs or after the object of transitive verbs
- Some adverbs of time and place can start sentences for emphasis
- Adverbs of frequency, probability, and degree: Usually placed before the main verb
Emphasis and Beginning Placement
- Negative adverbs at sentence beginning require inverted word order
