Understanding Prepositions
- Prepositions describe relationships between nouns/pronouns and other words
- The noun or pronoun used with a preposition is called the object of the preposition
- A preposition can have more than one object (e.g., through the cave and the forest)
Prepositions of Time
- AT: Used with specific times, mealtimes, and points in time (at 6 PM, at lunchtime)
- ON: Used with specific days and dates (on Friday, on 4th July)
- IN: Used with parts of day, months, years, seasons (in the evening, in 2023)
Prepositions of Place
- IN: Countries, cities, enclosed spaces (in India, in the room)
- AT: Small places, addresses, specific points, activity locations (at home, at work)
- ON: Surfaces, borders, streets, islands, public transport (on the table, on the bus)
Special Uses and Position of Prepositions
- Prepositions can appear at the end when object is relative/interrogative pronoun
- Some verbs require specific prepositions (agree with, differ from, correspond to)
- BY is used for doer in passive voice, WITH for instrument
