Introduction to Number Sequences and Arithmetic Sequences

  • A number sequence is a collection of numbers arranged in a specific order according to some rule
  • Examples include natural numbers (1, 2, 3, ...), even numbers (2, 4, 6, ...), odd numbers (1, 3, 5, ...)
  • An arithmetic sequence is formed by starting with a number and adding the same number repeatedly

Finding Terms Using Position and Common Difference

  • If we know any term and its position, we can find other terms using the common difference
  • To find a term ahead: add common difference × number of positions ahead
  • To find a term behind: subtract common difference × number of positions behind

Finding Terms from Two Given Terms

  • When two terms and their positions are given, first find the common difference
  • Common difference = (Term difference) ÷ (Position difference)
  • Once d is found, any other term can be calculated

Checking if a Number is a Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

  • To check if a number N is a term of an arithmetic sequence, calculate (N - first term) ÷ d
  • If the result is a whole number, then N is a term at that position + 1
  • If the result is not a whole number, then N is not a term of the sequence
