Definition and Basic Properties of Tangents

  • A tangent to a circle is a line that touches the circle at exactly one point called the point of contact
  • The tangent at any point on a circle is perpendicular to the radius through that point
  • From any point outside a circle, exactly two tangents can be drawn to the circle

Tangent-Chord Angle Properties

  • The angle between a tangent and a chord through the point of contact equals the angle in the alternate segment
  • Angles in the same segment are equal to the angle between tangent and chord
  • The angle between tangents at ends of a chord plus the central angle of the chord equals 180°

Construction of Tangents

  • To construct tangent at a given point on circle: draw perpendicular to radius at that point
  • To construct tangents from external point: use the circle with diameter as line joining external point to center
  • The intersection points of this auxiliary circle with the original circle give the points of contact

Tangent Length and Distance Problems

  • Use Pythagorean theorem: (tangent length)² + (radius)² = (distance from external point to center)²
  • Two tangents from same external point are always equal in length
  • Right triangle is always formed by radius, tangent, and line from center to external point
