What to Focus On

  • Congruent figures have identical shape AND size
  • Triangle congruence requires all six parts (3 sides + 3 angles) to be equal
  • Correspondence order in notation matters: △ABC ≅ △PQR means A↔P, B↔Q, C↔R

  • SAS requires two sides and the angle BETWEEN them
  • The angle must be included (sandwiched) between the two sides
  • Order matters: side-angle-side, not side-side-angle

  • ASA: Two angles and the side BETWEEN them
  • AAS: Two angles and any side (not necessarily between the angles)
  • Both ASA and AAS are equivalent criteria

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any three equal parts (sides or angles) make triangles congruent, regardless of which parts they are

The order of vertices in congruence statements doesn't matter - triangle ABC ≅ triangle XYZ is the same as triangle ABC ≅ triangle YXZ

SAS means any two sides and any angle, not necessarily the included angle
