Motion and Rest - Basic Concepts
- Motion is the continuous change in position of an object with respect to time and observer
- Rest means no change in position with respect to time and observer
- Motion is relative - same object can be at rest for one observer and in motion for another
Types of Motion
- Rectilinear Motion: Object moves along a straight line (e.g., car on straight road, falling stone)
- Circular Motion: Object follows a circular path (e.g., hands of clock, merry-go-round)
- Oscillatory Motion: Object moves to and fro about a fixed position (e.g., pendulum, swing)
Distance and Displacement
- Distance is the total path length covered by an object (scalar quantity)
- Displacement is the shortest distance between initial and final positions (vector quantity)
- Distance is always positive and can never be zero if object moves
Speed and Velocity
- Speed is distance covered per unit time (scalar quantity)
