Force and Its Effects
- Force is a push or pull acting on an object that can change its state of motion or shape
- Effects of force: make object move from rest, change speed, change direction, change shape
- Balanced forces: equal forces acting in opposite directions, no change in motion but can change shape
Newton's Laws of Motion
- First Law (Law of Inertia): Objects at rest stay at rest, objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by unbalanced force
- Inertia is the tendency of objects to resist change in their state of motion
- Mass is a measure of inertia - heavier objects have more inertia
Conservation of Momentum
- Total momentum of isolated system remains constant before and after collision
- No external force means momentum is conserved
- Applications: recoil of gun, rocket propulsion, collision problems
Friction
- Friction opposes motion between surfaces in contact
- Static friction prevents motion, kinetic/sliding friction opposes ongoing motion
- Static friction > sliding friction > rolling friction
