Nervous System Basics
- Nervous system detects stimuli (changes in environment) and produces appropriate responses
- Two main divisions: Central Nervous System (CNS) - brain and spinal cord, and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - all nerves
- Basic unit is the neuron (nerve cell) with three parts: dendrites (receive impulses), cell body (processes information), and axon (transmits impulses)
Central Nervous System
- Brain is protected by skull bones and three membranes called meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid
- Cerebrum: Largest part, controls voluntary actions, thinking, memory, and intelligence. Has grey matter (cell bodies) outside and white matter (nerve fibers) inside
- Cerebellum: Controls balance, posture, and coordination of muscular movements
Reflex Actions and Peripheral Nervous System
- Reflex actions are automatic, immediate responses to stimuli that don't involve conscious thinking
- Two types: Natural reflexes (inborn like breathing, blinking) and Conditioned reflexes (learned like salivating at food smell)
- Reflex arc pathway: Stimulus → Receptor → Sensory neuron → Spinal cord → Motor neuron → Effector → Response
Endocrine System and Hormones
- Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into blood stream to reach target organs
- Hormones are chemical messengers that control growth, development, metabolism, and reproduction
- Pituitary gland (master gland): Controls growth and reproductive development, secretes growth hormone and gonad-stimulating hormone
