Key Topics to Revise

1

Work - Definition and Conditions

  • Work is done only when force is applied AND the object moves in the direction of force
  • If force is applied but no displacement occurs, work done is zero (e.g., pushing a wall)
  • If force and displacement are perpendicular to each other, work done is zero
2

Energy - Definition and Forms

  • Energy is the capacity to do work
  • Energy has the same unit as work - Joule (J)
  • Energy exists in many forms: mechanical, thermal, light, electrical, sound, magnetic, nuclear
3

Energy Transformations

  • Energy can be converted from one form to another but cannot be created or destroyed
  • Examples: Electric bulb (electrical → light), fan (electrical → mechanical), microphone (sound → electrical)
  • In a dam: PE of water → KE of falling water → rotational KE of turbine → electrical energy
4

Power

  • Power is the rate of doing work or rate of energy consumption
  • Power = Work done ÷ Time taken
  • SI unit is Watt (W), also measured in Horse Power (HP)
