Key Topics to Revise

1

Force and Its Effects

  • Force is a push or pull acting on an object that can change its state of motion or shape
  • Effects of force: make object move from rest, change speed, change direction, change shape
  • Balanced forces: equal forces acting in opposite directions, no change in motion but can change shape
2

Newton's Laws of Motion

  • First Law (Law of Inertia): Objects at rest stay at rest, objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by unbalanced force
  • Inertia is the tendency of objects to resist change in their state of motion
  • Mass is a measure of inertia - heavier objects have more inertia
3

Conservation of Momentum

  • Total momentum of isolated system remains constant before and after collision
  • No external force means momentum is conserved
  • Applications: recoil of gun, rocket propulsion, collision problems
4

Friction

  • Friction opposes motion between surfaces in contact
  • Static friction prevents motion, kinetic/sliding friction opposes ongoing motion
  • Static friction > sliding friction > rolling friction
