Ecosystem and Its Components
- An ecosystem is a biological environment consisting of all organisms in an area and their physical environment
- A.G. Tansley coined the term 'ecosystem' in 1935 from Greek words 'oikos' (home) and 'systema' (system)
- Natural ecosystems include terrestrial (grasslands, deserts) and aquatic (rivers, ponds, oceans) types
Biotic Community and Nutrition Types
- Biotic community: populations of various organisms living together in the same habitat
- Autotrophs (producers): manufacture their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
- Heterotrophs (consumers): depend on other organisms for food - herbivores, carnivores, omnivores
Food Chains and Food Webs
- Food chain: succession of organisms where each feeds on the previous level
- Trophic levels: feeding levels in a food chain (I-producers, II-herbivores, III-carnivores)
- Grazing food chain: starts with living plants (grass→rabbit→fox)
Energy Flow in Ecosystems
- Energy flow is unidirectional - does not return to previous levels
- Only 10% of energy transfers to the next trophic level (10% rule)
- 90% of energy is lost as heat or used for life processes
